The Heart Of The Underdog

For as long as I can remember, I rooted for the underdog. And the underdog meant many things to me. It was a sports team that had an infinitely small chance of winning. A person experiencing homelessness. A childhood friend whose family life was one of struggle, inadequacy, and impoverishment. I would bring him home-cooked meals when I was nine years old. Seeing people struggle always hits that crystal center behind my heart, that aura that makes me who I am. We all have it…that beautiful essence behind our hearts that makes each of us so different yet so similar as humans. I knew this and felt this at a very young age. The next step for me was to cultivate this self-knowledge and feed it. Grow it daily. And in doing this, it helped me mature physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and financially.

All Growth Starts Within

All growth starts within. Internally. Whatever you are looking to improve in your life; maybe you want to earn more money, or begin a regular exercise regimen, to respond and not react, or develop the ability to be calm during moments of chaos. It all starts with the internal game. You may be wondering, “But Daniel, what does that mean, the internal game?” Great question.

Understanding The Trichotomy Of Control

Think of it from a control standpoint. There is what is called the Trichotomy of Control. First, there are things we have zero to no control over. These include things like what someone says to you, the weather, traffic, a long line at the coffee shop, the future, the past, and public perceptions of us. These are ALL external circumstances. As such, I encourage you to spend little to no time thinking or worrying about them. You have no control over them, so why spend precious time on them?

Then there are things we have some control over, but not full control. Things like a listing appointment. You have some influence over it but ultimately, it’s the seller’s decision. Another example is playing a team sport. You have some control since you’re playing in it, but not full control.

Finally, there are things we have FULL control over. These could be what we eat, what we say, our thoughts and actions, how we spend our time, our goals, the present, how we handle conflict, and our boundaries. These are ALL internal choices we can focus on, strengthen, and build. And we have 100% control over them!

Choosing A Solution-Oriented Mindset

That is where I like to spend my time. Now remember, it’s not always easy. There are times I also make poor choices. It’s part of the human experience. In those moments, I try to look at it from a solution-oriented approach. What I mean is I don’t look at it and say, “Oh no, I made a poor decision. What am I going to do?” That would be a problem-oriented mentality. Instead, I try to think this way, “It happened, so now how do I fix it?” That is a solution-oriented mentality. What a show of mental strength! As we build that internal foundation, like Biggie Smalls said, “The sky’s the limit”.

Why Internal Strength Matters In Real Estate

Now, you may be wondering, “why I am bringing up these things?” Well, being mentally, spiritually, and emotionally strong pays huge dividends in the world of real estate. Usually, a home represents a client’s largest asset, so as agents and brokers, we are bestowed with a huge responsibility. We are charged with bringing the buyer and seller together, navigating inspections, appraisals, attorneys, title companies, lenders, and bringing that transaction to closing as smoothly as possible.

Do things sometimes go sideways? Yes. Do unexpected circumstances and problems arise during a real estate transaction? Yes. Do deals fall apart when they are about to close? You bet they do.

Being Calm In The Chaos

The million-dollar question is how do you handle these unexpected circumstances that you have no control over, and that also affect your income? Do you get angry, anxious, and indignant? Or do you have that mental acuity, that emotional maturity, that spiritual awareness to take a beat, take a step back, process what happened, and formulate a plan moving forward? And can you have a hard conversation with a seller and not get agitated or fervent?

This is where having internal strength and a foundation of character, integrity, and empathy pays those extraordinary dividends. Your clients need you to be calm in the storm of chaos. It’s why they hired you. Make them proud that they have you in their corner, fighting for them along the way when the going gets tough.

The Privilege Of Serving Through Real Estate

We work in an industry that affects every human being on earth. It’s why everyone loves it so much. How many people do you know follow real estate reality shows, look at homes that sell in their area, or sit on real estate apps looking at houses they would love to own? Literally everyone I know! I do too, although it’s my duty to know what’s tracking and selling in markets I serve.

Imagine what a privilege it is as agents and brokers to help someone achieve their dream of home ownership for the first time. To help a client sell their home so they can move on to the next part of their life journey. To me, it’s an honor, and I am grateful to be able to serve.

Becoming The Best Version Of Yourself

It’s my responsibility to be the best and highest version of myself that I can be in all facets of life. Because when I am, I’m able to serve the public in the best and highest way. And the rewards for that go way beyond money!
